Abstract: Little happened after whaling until International Polar Year 1882-83. Austro-Hungarians under von Wohlgemuth sent 14 men to do meteorology, earth's magnetism, aurora, hydrogeography and mapping. Stay was successful and reasonably comfortable. Second Polar Year 1932-33 had Austrian station. Three Norwegian trappers overwintered 1906-07, using birds and eggs as supplement. Met. station came in 1921. In 1917-18 242/262 fox skins were blue. Fox trapping was forbidden from 1965. Stock nearly disappeared, but some have come in over ice since. Article describes use of island in WW2 and since.
