Record #148405:

The first wintering on Jan Mayen / Louwrens Hacquebord.

Title: The first wintering on Jan Mayen / Louwrens Hacquebord.
Author(s): Hacquebord, Louwrens.
Date: 1998.
In: Circumpolar Journal. (1998.), Vol. 13(2) (1998)
Abstract: Describes intentional, fatal overwintering of seven men 1633-34, following successful, accidental English one on Spitsbergen. (Seven on Spitsbergen survived, but their successors did not.) They missed relief by one month. Death was probably caused by half-cooked bear meat, or possibly scurvy, as scurvy grass dried up before winter. Cold did not help. Extracts from diaries give little idea of morale, though shows how weak they were.
Notes:
