Abstract: Saami called compression wood bingal. It is very hard and brittle, and produced when coniferous trunk begins to lean or is blown on by strong prevailing winds. Warmed over fire it becomes plastic. Saami used it for skis, sledges and bows. Best type made skis able to run by themselves! In northern Finland people learnt to help make compression wood artificially.
