Record #147835:

Sult og Trangstider i Vestgrønland fra år 1700 til 1900 / Ane Marie B. Pedersen.

Title: Sult og Trangstider i Vestgrønland fra år 1700 til 1900 / Ane Marie B. Pedersen.
Translated title: Hunger and hard times in West Greenland from 1700 to 1900.
Author(s): Pedersen, Ane Marie B.
Date: 1998.
Language: Danish.
In: Grønland. (1998.), Vol. 46(6-7) (1998)
Abstract: Traditional hunting life had obligations to share catches (unequally) and bad seasons, when hunger killed many. Account describes changes since arrival of Danish traders. Some Inuit traded what was spare, some sold all their catches, even clothing. Danish reactions recounted here were sympathetic, not always sensible, and pauperism grew. Some Christian teaching was misleading - "take no thought" or sabbatarianism that forbade hunting even in direst need (Moravians). Diaries of priests and inspectors give details. Author wonders whether suicidal young lack both stress and fellowship in Welfare State.
