Abstract: | Describes time under Olav Peter Lie, oldest of all company doctors. He was psychiatrist and dentist too, widower with three daughters. 1919 also saw first priest at Longyearbyen. Americans had organised rescue squad, just in time for major fire disaster in 1920, which Lie wrote up medically. He warns against tuberculosis (which Svalbard is not suited to treating), mental illnss and venereal disease in infectious stage. He describes various conditions treated and wishes trappers curbed - "robbers" who use strychnine besides bullets and traps. First boat of year brings first colds. |
