| Abstract: | Placenames are discussed as cultural relics, both primary and secondary, and classification is explained. All from Slettnes are Norwegian. Fishing names described locality, fish found there, suitable time of year, methods of catching (including dynamite!), preparation of equipment, processing of fish and so on. Farming names were varied in similar fashion. Others were tied to reindeer herding, egg collecting, domestic needs such as washing clothes, water supply, religious uses, superstitions, individuals, plants or simply descriptive of topography. |
