Snow algae from north-west Svalbard: their identification, distribution, pigment and nutrient content / T. Müller, W. Bleiss, C.-D. Martin, S. Rogaschewski.
Title: | Snow algae from north-west Svalbard: their identification, distribution, pigment and nutrient content / T. Müller, W. Bleiss, C.-D. Martin, S. Rogaschewski. |

Abstract: | Coloured snow was mapped at 60 sites in 1995 and 1996. Colour was mainly Chlamydomonas or Chloromonas algae. Fields, several hundred metres in size, had no preferred orientation. Primary pigments and secondary carotenoids were studied under natural conditions. Extensive accumulation of astaxanthin and its esters accompanied transition from green biflagellated cells to orange spores, hypnozygotes and dark red cysts. Nutrient content of meltwater and snow algae had no direct correlation with content of carotenids. Relatively Relatively high Fe, Ca, P, K and Al contents were found. |
