Abstract: While characterising general glacial conditions in Spitsbergen region, it is noted that extent of glaciation in Greenland Sea was greatest for 30 years in south and least in north. Odden Ice Tongue started two months earlier and disappeared earlier than usual. Jan Mayen was in ice or on edge many times. Summer development of polynya in Fram Straits reached exceptional 85 000 km². Barents Sea cover was of normal extent. Explanation of lability is offered.
