Abstract: | Editorial takes up theme of seminar in Jokkmokk led by two researchers from Luleå University, Staffan Johansson and Nils-Gustaf Lundgren. They had calculated costs to community of reindeer herding, and reached pessimistic view. Their calculations, excluding hunting, fishing and all ancillary occupations, arrived at deficit of 200 million kronor from year 1994-95, omitting some state subsidy to whole community. They concluded that herding was very uneconomic, both as business and to community. One answer is suggested in later article by Nikolaus Stenberg. |
