Abstract: | Finno-Ugrian culture stems in large measure from shamanistic system which has existed since Stone Age, with roots in animism and ancestor worship. Examples are given from Ob Ugrians, Hungarians, Voguls and their attitude to sun (female). Offerings and decorations of Mordvin, Ostyaks and Estonians, and Saami magic drum symbolism are described. Deeper identification with animals or birds degenerated to wearing of masks. |
