Record #146588:
Um náttúruvár á Straumsvíkursvaedhinu / Páll Ilmsland.
Title: | Um náttúruvár á Straumsvíkursvaedhinu / Páll Ilmsland. |
Translated title: | On natural hazards in the Straumsvík area. |
Author(s): | Ilmsland, Páll. |
Date: | 1998. |
Language: | Icelandic. |
In: | Náttúrufraedingurinn. (1998.), Vol. 67(3-4) (1998) |
Abstract: | Article lists processes that could threaten aluminium works - storms, tidal surges, crustal rifting or earthquakes, and lava flows. Coastal flooding is lessened at Straumsvík by shelter of Reykjanes Peninsula, by rarity of westerly winds and by shortness of fetch from Greenland. Boundaries of North American and Eurasian Plates are close, with common earthquakes and ground fissuring. Works are on youngest lava flow, Kapelluhraun, 850 years old. Land subsidence is 2 mm/yr. Coast erodes readily in harsh, often frosty conditions. |
Notes: | Náttúrufraedingurinn. Vol. 67(3-4) :263-273 (1998). English summary p.272, English captions. |
