Abstract: | At Straumsvík c. 10 m³/sec flow into sea from highly permeable lavas, forming extensive basin, partly covered with new lava. Precipitation ranges from 1 m/yr near coast to 3 in mountains. Water is of excellent quality, and catchment almost uninhabited, with little vegetation. Reykjavík gets much of its water from these fields. Chief sources of pollution are enterprises and recreation sites on flat lava fields. ISAL aluminium plant on bay seems to have no effect further inland. Effects of other activities are not known. |
