Record #146203:
Några orsaker till Andrée-expeditionens undergång / Rolf Kjellström.
Title: | Några orsaker till Andrée-expeditionens undergång / Rolf Kjellström. |
Translated title: | Some reasons for the failure of the Andrée Expedition. |
Author(s): | Kjellström, Rolf. |
Date: | 1998. |
Language: | Swedish. |
In: | Ymer. (1998.), Vol. 117 (1998) |
Abstract: | Article explains balloon's suspect carrying-power, party's lack of fitness or Arctic experience, and desolation in which they landed after just 3 days. They wasted much energy on trying to go against drift of ice, and were cast ashore on Kvitøya after another 20. It is not clear what ills affected them at this stage or what they died of. Plausible explanation is that they were weakened from trichinosis from bear meat, but author rejects this. He believes they died of exhaustion and dehydration, i.e. of cold. Wonder is not how they died on liveable island, but how they survived to reach it. |
Notes: | Ymer. Vol. 117 :26-38 (1998). |
