| Abstract: | Historical works describe society up to 19th Cent. as agricultural, but author shows how farming was younger sister of fishing. Laxárdal Saga and others show intense fishing in 11th Cent. in West Iceland. Stockfish exports began in 1300, continuing until 1800. Three eras of boat sizes can be seen. Three seasons followed shoals around coast, and migrant fishermen moved south in winter. Fully dried stockfish had many characteristics of cereal. In 19th Cent., "age of smacks", it was mostly salted first. In 1902 first motor was installed in an Icelandic fishing boat. |
