Abstract: Author's mother had two sons there in 11 years' total stay, and lost husband and one son in WW2, when she came to Scotland and sewed uniforms (her trade) for Norwegian forces. Coal mining was hard life, especially before 1925. After this, island came under Norwegian laws and Union was set up, bringing improvements for miners. Syndicalist-Communist forces sought on two occasions to cause strike. In 1917 "Nordlys" supported it, but agitators were transported. First air link in 1959 broke isolation. Several personalities, some given government recognition, are described.
