Author(s): Falk, Fritz Joachim.

Abstract: Greenland travel in 18th Cent. in sailing ships was extremely dangerous. Many seafolk from islands of Föhr and Röm in Schleswig-Holstein died in Arctic seas. There are testimonies of miraculous preservation and rescue from storm and ice pressure, which strengthened faith of voyagers. Faith of seafarers in life and death is shown on gravestones on island cemeteries, ships's logs and many written accounts. Of special value to posterity are full records of Commander Rörd Knuten from Nieblum on Föhr, which are published for first time here.
