Abstract: Article describes small numbers of Saami reindeer herding, status of minority dialects in predominantly North Saami culture, encroachments of peasant farming at start of century and their decay since, with effects on Saami, Taxed Mountains, Sameting, its factions and powerlessness, effects of immigration on (other) Saami minority, and herd and animal sizes. Comparisons are made with case of Norway, from which many initiatives come, and with Russia, where reindeer herding is more intensive.
