Abstract: Article evaluates importance and roles of present day whaling. Factors discussed are current status of resources, occupational and demographic patterns of population, social and economic needs and conditions of Greenlanders, and nutritional requirements. Social importance is emphasised. Tables give catches by region (seals, small cetaceans, minke, and fin and humpbacks), examples of uses of 12 whale products traditionally and now, and average consumption per day of food (whale, seal, caribou, birds, fish, imported products) with nutritional breakdown.
