Abstract: (Swedish version is longer). Article describes Komi (Zyrian) Republic and renaissance of its culture, glimpses of Syktyvkar and Vorkuta, Communism's gulag, and of countryside. Oil spill disaster and youthful drunks are noted. Author visited reindeer herder on his return from tundra and learnt how babies and adults fed on sledge journeys. Oil chief predicted that herding would survive on smaller scale, with main income of republic from oil.
