Abstract: Describes first Saami map and rich meaning of Saami place names; describes ubiquitous roofed Pomor crosses and their contribution to landscape, faith and superstition. They were often "vow crosses" following deliverance; describes observations from journey through Karelia; describes ideas of wind in Komi mythology, with effect on dead, crops, and abduction (wind can snatch children from specially dangerous places), curses and their revocation, and traditional "protectors" against shuvgei.
