| Abstract: | Thesis concerns literature of Lapland in period and image of region in it, as portrayed by several Finnish writers and Saami Hans-Aslak Guttorm. Frameworks are found in themes of post-colonial theory, ideas of modernisation and notion of changing identities. A. Järventus's and E.N.Manninen's works changed people's ideas of Lapland from those of travelogues, small-scale scientific works and Topelius's fearsome land of Sampo inhabited by high-cheeked Lapps. Self-image of Finnish inhabitants was also incorporated. Their notions were very derogatory of Saami, being based on those of Finnish settlers and lumbermen. Relationship to harsh landscape is conspicuous. |
