Abstract: Describes retrieval of land surface temperatures from DMSP-SSM/I brightness temperatures based on in-situ measured microwave signatures of natural surface types. Comparisons of estimated and measured surface temperatures show typical RMS errors of surface temperatures estimation between 2 and 4K. Proposes snow discrimination algorithm applied to global SSM/I datasets.
