Abstract: Based on field work among eastern Khanty in 1993-96, describes patterns of land use, community development and political activity with particular reference to impact of petroleum development Examines historical land use, group identity and leadership among Khanty and post-Soviet political developments. Argues that secure future for Khanty depends on investing family-kinship communities with effective local power to manage their lands.
