Abstract: | To understand difficult situation of over-grazing and reindeer death in inner Finnmark, one must first understand household organisation. Nowadays, men herd full time, while younger and middle-aged women are in employment, besides occasional reindeer work, but not traditional craftwork. Income from employment may be diverted to increase size of deer flock. Another cause of over-grazing is monocultural aspect of herding - just for meat. All-round herding in Kautokeino in 1960 is compared with situation in 1990. |
