Sami traditional terminology: professional terms concerning salmon, reindeer and snow / Nils Jernsletten.

Title: Sami traditional terminology: professional terms concerning salmon, reindeer and snow / Nils Jernsletten.
Author(s): Jernsletten, Nils.
Date: 1997.
Publisher: Karasjok, Norway: Davvi Girji
In: Sami culture in a new era : the Norwegian Sami experience. (1997.),
Abstract: Explains idea of traditional knowledge, gained through experience and interpreting world in terms of one's or one's animals' action in it. Examples of such Saami knowledge are given for snow (grazing or travelling conditions), reindeer classification, river flow, types of salmon and seals (hardly used at all today). Norwegian education is largely theoretical, which makes "Saami" schools Saami in name only. One way back, at least for non-Saami to be made to use Saami, is in management training, where wilderness guide passes on necessary knowledge for survival.
