Record #144448:

Sami culture in a new era / Harald Gaski.

Title: Sami culture in a new era / Harald Gaski.
Author(s): Gaski, Harald.
Date: 1997.
Publisher: Karasjok, Norway: Davvi Girji
In: Sami culture in a new era : the Norwegian Sami experience. (1997.),
Abstract: Editor introduces Saami culture, identity and sense of belonging, viewed from inside by active member of minority. Deals with circumstances that still make it possible to practice culture productively. "yoik" was chosen as form of expression because of its central position and its subtle system of double meanings and metaphor. Considers words used to distinguish "art" and "craft" in modern world. In Saami tradition, anything new must be shown to be significant and of value, so Paulus Utsi cautiously named poems "Giela giela" - ensnare language, followed by "Giela gielain".
