| Abstract: | Paper concentrates on affairs of two island parishes, Bø and Hadsel, in northern Nordland from 1860-1960 and how they reacted differently to state initiatives. Latter included economic liberalisation, lawgiving, schooling, nationalism and postwar planned economy. Effects included changes of occupation, emigration, and centralised care of old people. Explanation of different reactions includes two permanent features: climate and soil. |
