Abstract: Paper describes coastal farming community in Lule district in 16th Cent., settlement sponsored by king and archbishop of Uppsala, and role of birkarls as king's agents. It explains success of community by rich natural resources of fish and furs. Lule district was one of Sweden's richest, and could afford Antwerp masterpiece on altar. Expansion of herding is ascribed to shortages of natural resources and too much trapping, but was interrupted several years by lack of grazing. Area fell into decline towards end of period.
