Abstract: Paper considers reindeer legislation from gender point of view. First law was in 1886, turning point, when Lapp tax lands and taxed mountains were combined into Lapp settlements. Individual property became collective. Women of fishing and settled Saami were put on same footing as Swedes. All Saami had right to herd deer. Some did even when running household and raising family. 1928 Law set up discrimination against Saami women which lasted until 1971; herding, hunting and fishing were limited to members of settlements. 1993 Law gave herding rights to all Saami, whether settled or nomadic.
