Abstract: | Paper is account of Laestadianism in Ofoten up to very recent times. Revival came through Saami girl in 1848 and was nourished by migrating reindeer herders. Norwegian speakers joined from 1870 and conflict with clergy followed. Ofotban brought new, looser ways of life and other non-Lutheran churches. Some entered local politics; others held back. More revival in 1919 led to Norwegian language dominance. After WW2 more revival led to building chapels; employment changes showed need for education. Laestadianism was and always remained way of salvation, although it did meet changing social needs. |
