Translated title: The meeting between Lule Saami and sea Saami in Tysfjord in 18th and 19th Cents.
Author(s): Nielssen, Ragnar.
Date: 1997.
Publisher: Tromsø, Norway: Senter for samiske studier
Language: Norwegian.
In: Stat, religion, etnisitet. (1997.),
Abstract: Parish was purely Saami at beginning of 17th Cent., with 500 sea Saami in 102 households and is now mainly Norwegian with minority of Lule Saami. Originally sea Saami fished, ran some cattle, grew corn and built boats. Herding Saami came c. 1600 to summer pastures, but did not descend steep slopes to settlements, so there were no disputes, but some trade. In 18th Cent. times were hard in mountains, and some Lule Saami came to fjord and lived much like sea Saami, but with still some reindeer herding. With Saami Mission and Norwegian immigration, sea Saami were gradually absorbed.
