Title: Från fattiglapp till lapphjon / Bertil Marklund.
Translated title: From poor Lapp to Lapp pauper.
Author(s): Marklund, Bertil.
Date: 1997.
Publisher: Tromsø, Norway: Senter for samiske studier
Language: Swedish.
In: Stat, religion, etnisitet. (1997.),
Abstract: Paper deals with cases in Saami areas and beyond from 1600 to 1748. Begging was common, and although Saami were at one time very hospitable to their wandering fellows, later examples are of richer Saami turning away the needy. Crown passed various laws, and some cases that came to court are described. Workhouses were set up and filled. Some Saami came out from their normal trapping and herding to work at seasonal jobs in cultivated parts. Aim of administration was to keep Saami in own areas when not outside trading.
