| Abstract: | Backscatter readings were recorded in autumn 1995. Part I is theory of radar system and of key parameters surface roughness and dialectric properties of scattering medium. Influence of soil moisture and textural composition on latter are explained. Part II deals with test site and field work, comprising roughness and soil moisture measurements and meteorological observations. Surface scattering is dominant process. In part III, backscattering coefficient σ⁰ is analysed from 25 scenes of various types. In part IV two surface scattering models are used to explain influence of roughness and moisture on backscattering behaviour. Both underestimate temporal changes. |
