Title: The sun in Saami mythology / Anna Westman.
Author(s): Westman, Anna.

In: Acta Borealia. (1997.), Vol. 14(2) (1997)
Abstract: Paper describes place of sun, beaivi, in Saami religion. Priests from 17th and 18th Cents. used Greco-Roman paradigm and saw major celestial god. But in circum-Polar societies there is concept of "mothers" who regulate fertility and protect family, especially pregnant women, and children. Sáráhkká is one, whose realm is middle of tent. Beaivi is part of this complex, burning fire in sky, annually recurring force which greens spring hills and feeds reindeer. She protects calves in spring and sees women get milk in summer.
