| Abstract: | Advantages and disadvantages of 1 1/2 year old and 3-5 year olds for breeding were to be investigated. Former can be slaughtered after covering does, while large bucks, growing only slowly, eat up pastures, and may also treat does more roughly. Many herders hold that larger bucks bring does on earlier and cover more reliably, with better genes winning next generation. Project divided flock in two, one with 6 small bucks and one with 3 of each size. Large bucks were more stressed. In both herds one dominant buck got half "cake", but rankings and harem stability need further study. |
