Abstract: Monuments are remains of activity, dwellings, religious observance or journeys, fixed in landscape, or may be traditional sacred woods or mountains. Place names are also important part of cultural landscape. Article describes council's remit, origin and staff. Its relationship to communes should ensure that all remains older than 100 years are protected. In cases of necessary destruction, there should first be full recording. In theory, Saami are stewards of both memories and preservation of monuments.
