Life and people at the northern tree-line: Geographer Ilmari Hustich as a researcher into Arctic and sub-Arctic cultures / Helena Maliniemi.
Title: | Life and people at the northern tree-line: Geographer Ilmari Hustich as a researcher into Arctic and sub-Arctic cultures / Helena Maliniemi. |
Author(s): | Maliniemi, Helena. |
Date: | 1997. |
In: | Acta Borealia. (1997.), Vol. 14(1) (1997) |
Abstract: | Article focuses on Hustich's studies of Saami in Finnish Lapland during 1930s and 1940s, his change of focus from biogeography to anthropogeography (related to his personal history and current events), settlements and subsistence at tree-line, topic of North and post-war development, impact among Finnish geographers and today's relevance of his research. On Saami, he preferred terms "reindeer", "river" and "sea" Saami to "mountain" or "forest" Saami, as he considered that nomadism was dying out. Certainly WW2 evacuees took to agriculture among Finns. |
