Author(s): | Grydeland, Sven Erik. |
Date: | 1997. |
In: | Acta Borealia. (1997.), Vol. 14(1) (1997) |
Abstract: | During 16th and 17th Cents. Sea Saami at Kvaenangen were in "siidas" with common access to land and sea, fishing and hunting, and small flocks. From 1716 onward, Thomas von Westen and others, by royal command and their own zeal, with serious study of Saami language and mythology, launched missionary offensive; state and missionary attitudes to Saami status were different, but reinforced one another. Land was shared privately and Saami numbers grew fast. Article discusses significance of women's position in earlier Saami society (and choices of fertility), if anything, higher than that of men. |
