Abstract: Arctic benthic organisms were collected on shelves of north-east Greenland, Spitsbergen and western Barents Sea. Fatty acid compositions were generally characterised by predominance of poly-unsaturated fatty acids 20:5(n-3) and 22:6(n-3) together with saturated fatty acid 16:0, which reflected dominance of phospholipids. Occurrence of intact wax esters suggested ingestion of large herbivorous copepods. Unusual fatty acid composition was found for most brittle stars, extremely low for carnivores. Results show that lipid analyses can help identify trophic relationships.
