| Abstract: | 22 stations in inter-tidal and shallow sublittoral of Bjørnøya (74 deg. N, 19 deg. E) were studied in August 1994, revealing large and diverse standing crop of macro-algae (16 species) and littoral macrofauna (at laest 17). In most places biomass of macro-organisms exceeded 100 g ww/m². In shallow sublittoral, from 2-20 m, 45 animal taxa and 23 algae species were collected. Abundance of littoral species and zoo-geographic origin resemble that of Spitsbergen rather than that of equally near mainland. First record of Mytilus edulis from island is presented. Arctic amphipod Gammarus setosus was present, but its sibling G. oceanicus was not. |
