Record #143873:

Inter-annual consistency in the fluctuating energy requirements of captive harp seals Phoca groenlandica / April Hedd, Rosemary Gales, Deane Renouf.

Title: Inter-annual consistency in the fluctuating energy requirements of captive harp seals Phoca groenlandica / April Hedd, Rosemary Gales, Deane Renouf.
Author(s): Hedd, April.
Gales, Rosemary.
Renouf, Deane.
Date: 1997.
In: Polar Biology. (1997.), Vol. 18(5) (1997)
Abstract: Metabolic rate and body temperature were measured over annual cycle. Seasonal shifts were evident in both parameters. Standard metabolic rates were lower than predicted during autumn/winter. Variation was closely related to changes in predicted lean body mass. Both deep rectal and core body temperatures covaried with metabolic rate. Implications of these shifting basal requirements are considered in light of finding impact of harp seal herd on fisheries resources in north-west Atlantic.
