| Abstract: | During summer expeditions of RV "Oceania" in 1995-1996, oceanographic investigations comprising CTD profiling and suspension measurements were conducted in Svalbard fjords and shelf waters. Freshwater volume was estimated independently. Preliminary calculations gave 80 km³ of freshwater in summer, with Hornsund and Kongsfjord producing 0.4-0.7 km³ at height of summer. This corresponds well with glaciological estimates, giving 14.6-27.5 km³, since glacial discharge is estimated to contribute 42% of freshwater budget, remainder coming from Barents Sea waters of reduced salinity. |
