Title: Carcass of a bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus) found in the lateral moraine of the Jemelianovbreen Glacier, eastern Svalbard / Ida Lønne, Eva Fuglei.
Author(s): Lønne, Ida.
Fuglei, Eva.
Date: 1997.
In: Polar Research. (1997.), Vol. 16(1) (1997)
Abstract: Carcass 8 m long melted out from remnant glacier ice in August 1996. Folded and sheared sediment bands in ice suggest that whale was incorporated during advance of glacier. Roundness of stones found in its stomach suggest that it was on beach when glacier advanced. Radiocarbon dating yielded 1535- 1660 AD, during Little Ice Age.
