Abstract: Hylocomium splendens and Pleurozium schreberi have been used as bioindicators of atmospheric multi-element chemistry in pilot (1992), catchment and regional (1995) stages of Kola Ecogeochemistry Project. Area is most pristine and most polluted in northern Europe. Moss was sampled from 598 sites. Annual deposition was estimated for 16 elements, based on snow and rain. Predominant wind is from SW on Russian side. Comments include effects of industrial centres (including Murmansk), distance from sea, oil burning and open cast mining.
