Abstract: Article gives geographical and climatic setting of Russian reindeer herding. Tundra and taiga, with its different conifers, and distribution of reindeer in these are described. Various peoples occupied in herding are listed. Different ways of using deer are illustrated; bigger than Saami deer, some can be ridden. Special attention is given to Yamalo-Nenets and Sakha herders and to sovkhozes in Kola Peninsula. Social and economic difficulties of present are explained. Grazing is, however, good.
