Abstract: Study is mainly of Norrbotten firms operating in Murmansk Region. Background is Russian suspicion of business and different attitude to time and human relationships, but also conflict between westernizers and slavophils in Russia. 12 firms were questioned on reasons for entering Russia, use of language, getting information, getting to know and respect partners, getting accepted, labour force, Russian economic understanding, quality, taking initiative, group work, commitment and honesty. Three ways of organizing are given of responding to difficulties. Parallels with political negotiations are drawn.
