Abstract: | Work presents geology in some detail, arranged systematically as definitive study. Part 1 sets stage: islands, political history, outline history of geological research, geological frame in space, time, rocks, tectonostratigraphic sequences, geotectonic interpretations; Part 2 consists of regional descriptions; Part 3 is historical synthesis: pre-Vendian, Vendian, Cambrian-Ordovician, Silurian, Devonian, Carboniferous-Permian, Triassic, Jurassic-Cretaceous, Palaeogene, Neogene-Quaternary, modern glaciers and climate change; Part 4 is an appendix on economic geology. There are an index of place names and glossary of stratigraphic names. 10 contributors are credited with whole or part-chapters. Author hopes to survive to learn answer to debate on Hecla Hoek Complex, about which so much has been written, even since "solution" in 1955. |
