Record #141819:

K.B. Wiklunds Beiträge zur Religionsgeschichte der Samen / Hans Mebius.

Title: K.B. Wiklunds Beiträge zur Religionsgeschichte der Samen / Hans Mebius.
Translated title: K.B. Wiklund's contributions to the history of Saami religion.
Author(s): Mebius, Hans.
Date: 1996.
Publisher: Uppsala, Sweden: Uppsala University
Language: German.
In: Lapponica et Uralica. 100 Jahre finnisch-ugrischer Unterricht an der Universität Uppsala. (1996.),
Abstract: Ancient sources on Saami religion, including Schefferus's "Lapponia" and works by Tuderus and Rheen, were used by Wiklund in his researches on subject. Themes such as bear feast and bear hunt occur in bear songs. Shaman's drum was central to religious practice. Three patterns are known - sieve, bowl and box. Wiklund saw central core of Saami belief that remained distinct from Fenno-Scandinavian beliefs. He expressed this in his review of Reuterskiöld's "North Lappish Religion" (1912) and later saw ideas come together in notion of saivo - word of Germanic origin meaning inland lake or fresh water which mirrored divinity, so "saiva stone" or "saiva idol". However, in 1929 Wiklund was less clear about extent of Scandinavian influence in both pre-Christian and Christian Saami world view.
