Abstract: | Neiden Saami have taken case for exclusive rights in old siida area through Norwegian legal system and to European Court. They lost, getting only declaration that area was reindeer herding one. East Saami - (also called Skolt) nuortalaččat - had four siidas - Suenjel, Pechenga, Pasvik and Neiden. Community in Sevettijärvi attracted much Finnish and foreign interest after World War II. Describes their ancient traditions, history since 19th century, problems of Kven immigration and Neiden Saami's special case. Not even redoubtable leader Ivanovich was in local Reindeer Herders' Society. Norwegian "Arctic Ocean imperialism" was forestalled by Finnish occupation of Petsamo corridor in 1920. Neiden Saami became "unreliable Kven [sic] colony" to Norwegian administration in inter-war period, and were subjected to social- Darwinistic assimilation. Recovery came in 1960s, 400 years after monk Trifon's mission. |
