Ekspansjonisme eller forsvar av status quo? Sovjetsk Svalbard- politikk 1939-1953 / Sven G. Holtsmark.

Title: Ekspansjonisme eller forsvar av status quo? Sovjetsk Svalbard- politikk 1939-1953 / Sven G. Holtsmark.
Translated title: Expansionism or defence of status quo? Soviet Svalbard policy 1939-1953.
Author(s): Holtsmark, Sven G.
Date: 1996.
Publisher: Archangel'sk: Pomorskiy Universitet
Language: Norwegian.
In: Frykt og forventning : Russland og Norge i det 20. århundre. (1996.),
Abstract: Author's research into Soviet documents on post-World War II Svalbard agrees with previous western accounts, but throws light on relationship to USA's bases in Iceland and Greenland and on decision process in Soviet foreign ministry, who controlled case. Secretary at Barentsburg had noted strategic position of Svalbard in 1939, but foreign ministry was more concerned with its "null" status. After German occupation of Norway, head of Scandinavian desk asked for Red Army to occupy Svalbard until international situation should be normalised. After German attack on USSR, Molotov suggested British conquest of Svalbard. Molotov's demand in 1944 was shock, but Soviets did nothing about it for 18 months. His high-handed ploy merely strengthened public opinion in West against USSR.
